Pray

Scriptural Reference:

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (kjv) "Pray without ceasing."

1 John 5:14-15 (kjv) "And this is the confidence that we have in HIM, that, if we ask any thing according to HIS will, HE heareth us: and if we know that HE hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of HIM."

Colossians 1:17 (kjv) "And HE is before all things, and by HIM all things subsist."

It takes prayer to quiet ones heart and mind in faith.

It takes faith to quiet ones heart and mind in prayer.

I, like many believers in JESUS, am sometimes amazed at how simultaneously easy and difficult this life of faith can be. Not because of haranguing sorrow or by exultant fist shaking troubles that arrive suddenly. Nothing so roaring and rallying as that. I think it is rather, the ordinary tedious day after day of a life of faith that can tax the soul to plumb its depths until the bottom is arrived at solidly.

Our prayers are sometimes the whispers of our soul into the closed-eyed darkness of predawn when we find we cannot sleep but feel angst, anxious, and uncertain. Our prayers are more often the erratic jumble of incomplete sentences. In those moments we pray, with minds bombarded into submissive silence by the 'never wanted to hear this' information. We pray then as each word heralds our life will never be the same. We pray then with a kind of desperate rambling that requires subtitles, arms flailing, and a keening cry that shakes everything within 100 miles.

I recall a request for prayer because of the war. I was faced with the reality that the one I loved would be killing and might be killed. The clergymen spoke the dry unnatural religious phrases like a disembodied automaton who could have been blessing a cold plate of soup for their lack of fervor or sensitivity for my families impending peril. It was made obvious to me in that moment that it was not possible for them to pray as if they were beseeching GOD for their own flesh's life and safety.

I learned during that season that a tearful sigh is prayer.

I have designated a part of my closet for prayer. Into the artificial votive lit space I kneel and whisper what I daren't repeat to humanity. Often I lift my hearts frailest hope and deepest need via wordless tears and deep sighing. I lower my body to prostrate submission and breathe until the pain is eased and I am no longer pummelled by resentments, bitterness, and jealousies. Into that space, observed by GOD alone, I confess what I will never share. I pray until the immediate heat of the frustrated rage becomes a sigh of relief that my hearts earnest cry has been heard, whether or not I have heard an answer from JESUS who hears it all.

As a people who live a life of devotion to JESUS, when we are plunged into a shroud of pain too unmanageable to whisper to oneself about, even then, we dare to pray. Tears are prayer. Eyes lifted to heaven in hope is prayer. A head bowed in reverent contemplation is prayer.

Pray to JESUS knowing HE hears you.

Keep praying to JESUS even if, or when, you are not sure HE hears you.

Please don't pray to compete with some image or method of prayer you observed last week or years ago. As each voice is unique, so is the true sound of your hearts prayer. No need to pray for something that doesn't matter to you. That type of sound is a waste of your precious breathe and GOD is aware of every secret thought.

It's no point praying to be more pious, righteous and a model of Christian virtue when what you really long for is a full life of fruitfulness and a heart of contentment. GOD is not fooled if your prayer is full of correct terms and quotable catch phrases when what you really desire is a spouse to share your tidy quiet home with who won't leave jelly remnants in the peanut butter jar. There is no reason to bring your false face into the solemnity and safety of the prayer room. Whether you are praying because your life is threatened by illness, your heart is in jeopardy because of betrayal, or your dreams are hard to realize because of circumstances beyond your control. Pray honestly.
